The hospital's Education Department focuses on Community and Staff Education. Forums, classes and links to resources are but a few of the ways that SPH does outreach to promote health and wellness to the community. Most public forums are free and at the SPH Training Center on Pioneer Avenue or the Islands and Ocean Center on the Sterling Highway. Staff can be found twice a month at the Safeway grocery store, distributing free health and wellness information on topics important to you. You'll also find them supporting local wellness activities, including walks, runs and other health promotion events. Feel free to contact the Education Department with specific requests for wellness information at 235-0258. Upcoming events: Better Choices, Better Health South Peninsula Hospital will offer a series of six, 2 ½ hour classes to assist participants to self-manage their health and learn tools to feel better and be less limited by their chronic conditions. People with many kinds of long term conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and other ongoing conditions can benefit. A spouse, family member, or friend is welcome to attend the session with the person who is managing a chronic illness. The classes are led by Mary Fries, RN, Health Educator, Peggy Ellen Kleinleder RN, Nurse Educator, Denice Clyne and Pene Anderson, Certified Chronic Disease Self Management Facilitators. Leaders use a peer empowerment model to help participants manage symptoms, identify and reach personal health goals, and get more out of life. The current Better Choices, Better Health session will run from Sept 30 through Nov 4 from 530 PM to 8PM at the hospital’s Training Center at 203 Pioneer Avenue. The cost is $10 for the 6 week session. To register and for more information please call 235-0259. |
